But what is the World Environment Day?

The World Environment Day serves as a global mechanism, uniting individuals from more than 150 countries in the mission of Earth conservation and restoration. The occasion applauds environmental initiatives while stressing the role of governments, businesses, and individuals in fostering a sustainable planet. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been leading the event since its first iteration in 1973. Each year, different countries host World Environment Day to address unique environmental issues.

So what is the theme for the year of 2024?

“Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience” is the theme for 2024, where Saudi Arabia is taking up the responsibility of hosting World Environment Day prioritizing land restoration, fighting desertification, and enhancing drought resilience. The chosen theme underlines the importance of reviving deteriorated land and preserving our ecosystems.

How can you help?

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Use three simple steps to minimize trash. Cut back consumption, recycle items as much as possible and recycle materials like paper, plastic, glass, among others.
  • Save Energy: Operate power saving devices, switch off lights when not in use and think about using renewable energy types like solar panels.
  • Plant Trees: They absorb carbon and release oxygen. Join planting events or back up reforestation tasks.
  • Follow Ecofriendly Practices: Pick items produced from sustainable goods, support green businesses, and be aware of your environmental impact.
  • Raise Your Voice for Change: Spread the word on the environmental problems, get involved in cleanup activities and motivate others to make a move.
