Wood House concept and philosophy

Measuring around 60 m², this small dwelling reflects a firm commitment to green architecture and good environmental practices. From the choice of certified wood sourced out of sustainably managed forests to the design that minimises the impact on the topography, Wood House is a low-impact, low-carbon footprint construction. The building was designed to be suspended, avoiding excavations and alterations to the original topography. This approach allows water and wildlife to circulate freely under the structure and significantly reduces the environmental impact. In addition, the project was carefully designed to preserve existing native trees, integrating them into the architecture through openings in the roof that allow them to grow naturally.

The roof of the house extends into the landscape and embraces the existing trees. The challenge was not to cut down any trees.

Architectural, technical and structural features of Timber Frame construction

The construction, supplied and assembled by Kōzōwood Industries, stands out for its high thermal efficiency, structural lightness and sustainability. This system offers quick and precise assembly, with prefabricated panels that minimise waste and ensure excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. The modular design of Wood House directly benefits from these features, making the structure resistant, efficient and adaptable, while maintaining a lightweight construction that respects the topography of the terrain, promoting balanced integration with the local ecosystem.

Integration with the landscape of the Douro Valley

Wood House is described as a ‘chameleon house’ that blends naturally and discreetly into the Douro forest landscape, especially the pine forests that define the surrounding landscape. The wooden façade and green roof act as natural extensions of the land, enhancing and preserving the territory and respecting the local aesthetics and culture.
